I contend that self-employment is preferable to having a job because the more control we assume over our finances, the lower our risk and greater our reward. In my utopian dream everyone takes responsibility for themselves as an entrepreneur, freelancer, contractor. No one has all their money eggs in a single basket. For now, rather than fostering a movement, let's talk about you, shall we?

You Don't Want a Job Joel D Canfield 9780984094080 Books

This book 'happened' across my path - in my lingo and in my world that's 'it happened for a reason' - books, people, animals, and other 'things' do that when needed to keep me in a forward momentum. I so needed this book this past weekend! So if you come across this book and you just happen to be in a little place in life where you are thinking about pursuing your passion in life and maybe leaving your 'job' - this is a great little kick start or encouragement. Nicely written - love that it wasn't too long or too deep.

Feel stuck and at your wits' end on how to explain to a loved one why you need to leave the "safety" of your day job to start your own creative enterprise?

If so, this book helps you explain it to yourself ...so that you can explain it to others.

Joel clearly explains why people who work for other people rarely become the next Steve Jobs (or whichever other innovator resonates with you). Innovators don't work for others, they get others to work for and with them.

That's not to say you need to become a massive success to justify making a change. Because that's not what this is all about; this is about

This book is concise, instructive, and flows from topic to topic in a logical and digestible manner. I read it in two days, but I could easily imagine someone sitting at a local cafe and reading it in an afternoon.

But if you read it, I should warn you that you will likely end up thinking like me deciding to put your action plan in place to get started right now.

Should you buy it? Should you start working for yourself?

Pros concise, motivational, well written.

Cons a variety of case studies would be instructive - but maybe that will be the follow-up book?

And hey, at this price, you can't go wrong. Best of luck, and ...Just Do It!

Or do you prefer answering to a clock and relying on a limited paycheque?
Joel is an excellent writer and is very convincing. Reading this book has prompted me to take steps towards eventually becoming my own boss. If you're wondering whether breaking away from full-time corporate employment makes sense, you should read this book!
